The Rio Vista neighborhood, situated next to downtown Fort Lauderdale, is a community of over 1,000 homes. With the tree-lined streets, sidewalks and unique homes architecture, it’s also one of the oldest real estate communities in Fort Lauderdale.
Generally bound by Federal Highway (US1) on the west, Rio Vista real estate line is bordered on the east by the Intercostal Waterway, south of the New River and north of SE 12th Street. An era of prosperity and new transportation in the 1920's allowed Fort Lauderdale to begin the migration from an agricultural community to a real estate of resort town and residential areas. It was then real estate like Rio Vista began to develop.
The land boom in Rio Vista reached its zenith by 1925, when Fort Lauderdale's population reached 16,000. On September 18, 1926, the coast of South Florida was devastated by a Hurricane, which put Rio Vista into a depression, three years before the rest of the country entered one. During World War II, thousands of servicemen discovered the homes at Rio Vista and settled there after the war. After that, Rio Vista real estate development began again, and today, it’s charming homes reflect Rio Vista’s history.
